For Parents
Your child will LIVE and LOVE science!

  • Does your middle schooler prefer studying with friends to learning from books?
  • Can your son or daughter do tricks with technology that you didn't even know were possible?
  • Does your kid have "friends" all over the web and the world?
  • Does your middle schooler see science as something you only do in school—when you have to?

MySciLife makes learning science personal, social, and fun. Students "live" a science identity or concept in a safe, online learning community. They learn and interact with peers in their class and other classes around the country. Research has shown that social learning using technology builds on things kids love to do, and can open up a new interest in science at a time when many students, particularly girls, may lose interest in science.

We know that parents worry about their kids' online safety, especially when they use online, social tools. MySciLife respects these concerns. MySciLife maintains complete student anonymity in a safe, teacher-moderated, password-protected environment. Every post is approved by the student’s teacher, and all teachers participate in extensive professional development with other MySciLife teachers before their classes join MySciLife.

Every child must have parent permission to participate in MySciLife.  Your child’s work shows in the “public stream” (outside the password) only if you give permission. When your child interacts with peers across the U.S. in MySciLife, he/she is known only by his or her science “identity” name(s), such as Iggy Igneous Rock or Mighty Mitochondria. No one other than your child and his/her teacher can see their real name, school, or location. MySciLife also teaches good digital citizenship skills such as encouraging positive, meaningful comments and citing online sources. MySciLife never tolerates bullying.

Watch the video to learn what some participating students have to say about MySciLife.

MySciLife is currently for middle level (gr 6-9) science classes. It is - and will remain - free. Ask your child’s school or science teacher (and next year’s science teacher) to check it out!

What Parents Say:

"....Sarah was very excited about what they were learning and specifically discussed all the different topics they covered each day. It has increased her interest in science."

My son had nothing but good things to say about MySciLife. The role-play element coupled with the hands on use of the technology engaged the students and captivated their motivation to learn. Learning science was fun with MySciLife.

"Our son really enjoyed learning in this environment. It was wonderful to hear him telling me about the program, as usually he does not share much about school, class or his studies."

"What impresses me is the connection made between creativity and scientific discovery."

"Our son seemed more excited and interested in the science topics he talked about since participating in MySciLife."
